Walking With the Word
This is what Edmonton Faith Nation believes about the Bible:
We believe the Bible in its entirety is the inspired Word of God, the product of holy men of old who spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. The New Covenant, as recorded in the New Testament, we accept as our infallible guide in matters pertaining to conduct and doctrine
Basic Bible Stuff
The Bible is divided into 2 parts – The Old Testament & The New Testament
The Old Testament tells us about God and how a Saviour would come into the world. The New Testament tells us about how Jesus IS that Saviour, and then how those who believe in Jesus are to live until Jesus returns.
When reading the Old Testament, you should keep in mind that it is not written in chronological order. It is divided into books. Those books are not put into the order of what year they were written in. While some of the books retell the history, some other books tell of the future. There are 2 unusual books called Psalms and Proverbs which many people find great comfort in.
The New Testament begins with 4 books that tell us about Jesus. They are commonly referred to as the gospels. Those gospels are followed by the book of Acts. Acts tell us about how the promise of the Holy Spirit comes to the earth and how the church first begins to meet together. It is then followed by several books that are written to help believers understand and know God better, how live in a way that pleases God, and about what God says will happen in the future.
How to Read the Bible
When deciding to read your Bible here a couple of guidelines to help you along:
The Bible is not a sit down and read cover to cover book. It is a book that contains words that will help to guide your life. There will be many places it will come alive and be relevant to you and your future.
Try reading one gospel and then one of the smaller books like Ephesians or Philippians.
Then try one of the Old Testament books such as Exodus or 1 Samuel. I suggest those books as they read in a manner that is historical telling of events.
For Example:
Let’s take a look at the book, the gospel, of Mark:
Mark was one of the first gospels to be written out
Mark was one of the youngest disciples that walked with Jesus
There are many recordings of miracles in this gospel
While reading this gospel, ask and write down your answers to these questions:
What did you learn about Jesus?
What miracle really caught your attention?
Was there something you didn’t like?
Is there something you don’t understand?
